The Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals will kick off their weekend MLB rivalry series on Friday.
The Cubs are coming off a three-game set versus the Astros. Chicago lost the first two of that series 6-5 and 9-6, but came back with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday to avoid the sweep.
For the Friday game, the Cubs will be sending out Yu Darvish for the start. In his 55.0 innings and 2-3 record this year, Darvish has a 5.40 ERA with 67 Ks and 38 BBs.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they’re fresh off a set with the Phillies. St. Louis also fell in their first two games 4-3 and 11-4, but were able to power out a 5-3 win on Thursday.
For Friday’s start, St. Louis will be sending out Miles Mikolas. This year over 62.1 innings and a 4-5 mark, Mikolas has a 4.76 ERA with 46 Ks and 10 BBs.
The Cubs are 6-0 in their last six after an off day and 2-5 in their last seven overall. Chicago is 1-4 in their last five versus the NL Central and 1-5 in their last six after a win.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 7-18 in their last 25 overall and 2-6 in their last eight home games. St. Louis is 0-7 in their last seven after a win and 0-7 in their last seven Friday games.
Darvish was cruising along at a nice clip across three games, with 15.1 innings and six earned total, but he got into some trouble his last time up. Despite lasting 7.0 innings, Darvish eventually gave up 12 hits and six earned against the Reds May 25.
As for Mikolas, his numbers look good recently outside of a meltdown against the Rangers but he’s still lost three straight and hasn’t gotten much help.
Mikolas should stay in here for a while, but the Cards have GOT to find some offense. I am hesitantly taking St. Louis here (and it’s hard finding too many trends that support the pick), but Chicago will fight them every step of the way. Honestly I would be tempted to take the Cubs if the odds were a little better on this one, but the value just isn't there.
