The Line: St. Louis Cardinals -105 / Chicago Cubs -105 --- Over/Under: 8.5
Coming up Friday from Busch Stadium, we’ve got the opening game of an MLB rivalry series featuring the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cubs are coming off a series versus the Rockies. After splitting the first two games, Chicago was blown out Wednesday 11-2.
For Friday’s game, the Cubs will be going with LHP Jose Quintana. In his 26.2 innings and 3-1 record this year, Quintana has a 5.74 ERA with 23 Ks and 12 BBs.
Chicago’s leading hitter this year is Javier Baez with 29 hits, 20 runs, seven homers and 26 RBI. Second on the team is Kris Bryant with 25 hits, 14 runs and 12 RBI.
Over on the Cards’ side, they’re fresh off a pair versus the White Sox. St. Louis won both those games 3-2.
St. Louis is going with RHP Miles Mikolas on Friday. In his 33.0 innings and 3-0 record this year, Mikolas has a 3.27 ERA with 27 Ks and two walks.
Tops in hitting this season for the Cardinals is Tommy Pham, with 31 hits, 23 runs, four homers and 11 RBI. Yadier Molina and Jose Martinez are both tied for second with 30 hits apiece and 35 RBI between them.
The Cubs are 20-7 in their last 27 during game one of a series and 5-2 in their last seven overall. Chicago is also 4-0 in Quintana’s last four starts and 4-1 in his last five starts with five days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 4-0 in the last four home games and 8-3 in their last 11 following a win. St. Louis is also 12-5 in their last 17 overall and 17-37 in their last 54 following an off day.
After a rough stretch with 11 earned over two starts, Quintana calmed down in his last outing with 7.0 shutout innings on two hits versus the Brewers. Mikolas has been solid as well, with no more than two earned in any of his last three starts, each going 7.0 innings. This should be a pretty fun pitching matchup. With the home game energy brewing here, I’m leaning toward the Cardinals but the under seems like a good play too.
