The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs meet in game one of a three game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Friday.

The Chicago Cubs will look to build up some momentum after salvaging a series split with Arizona following a 7-6 walk-off win in the series finale on Thursday. Anthony Rizzo and David Bote each had a home run and two RBIs, with Bote’s two run shot tying the game in the bottom of the 9th before Rizzo went back-to-back to walk off Arizona. Kyle Schwarber went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Albert Almora Jr. added an RBI of his own in the winning effort. Tommy La Stella and Willson Contreras each added a base hit as well to cap off Chicago’s offense in the victory. Tyler Chatwood gave up four runs on five hits while walking six and striking out four over 4.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Eddie Butler picked up the win to improve to 1-1 this season. Mike Montgomery will start the opener and is 3-3 with a 3.73 ERA and 51 strikeouts this season. This will be Montgomery’s second career start against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to bounce back after losing the rubber match in their series finale against Cincinnati by a final score of 7-3 on Wednesday. Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong each had a solo home run with Molina going 3 for 5. Yairo Munoz added a double and an RBI as well to round out the scoring for the Cards in the losing effort. Matt Carpenter, Marcell Ozuna, Jose Martinez, Dexter Fowler and Greg Garcia each added a base hit as well to cap off St. Louis’ offense in the losing effort. Jack Flaherty gave up three runs on four hits while striking out eight over five innings of work, taking the loss to fall to 4-5 this season. Luke Weaver will start game one and is 5-9 with 4.79 ERA and 98 strikeouts this season. In his career, Weaver is 0-3 with a 10.89 ERA and 13 strikeouts against the Cubs.

Chicago is 6-1 in Montgomery’s last 7 series opening starts and 4-1 in their last 5 road games while the over is 10-1 in their last 11 division matchups. St. Louis is 1-4 in Weaver’s last 5 home starts and 1-6 in their last 7 home games while the over is 9-2 in their last 11 games overall. The over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 5-0 in Weaver’s last 5 starts against the Cubs.

The Cardinals have the extra day of rest coming into this one and that could come into play as the Cubs had to play a day game on Thursday and travel for this one and haven’t had a ton of success with Montgomery on the mound. However, Montgomery held these same Cardinals to just one run in six innings in his last start, while Weaver has allowed 13 runs in 12 innings against the Cubs this season and 23 runs in just 19 career innings against the Cubbies. All in all, given the pitching matchup, I think you have to take the safer starter and back Chicago here.
