MLB | Cincinnati Reds (61-63) at St. Louis Cardinals (66-57)
USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Monday in St. Louis in game one of their series.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in a battle for the post-season spot and right now they would be in as a Wildcard team in the NL. The Cardinals are 36-26 at home, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and and they are coming off of a win on Sunday. As a team the Cardinals are hitting .251 with Matt Adams hitting .308, Jon Jay hitting .304, and Matt Carpenter hitting .284. The Cardinals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.61 with the starters at 3.57 and the bullpen at 3.70. For game one against the Reds the Cards start Justin Masterson who makes his fourth start since being traded to St. Louis. Since the trade Masterson has allowed 17 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out nine over 15 innings for a 2-1 record and a 6.00 ERA.

The Cincinnati Reds are in the mix for a post-season spot but their hopes are slipping away. The Reds are 29-34 on the road, 3-7 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of getting swept in double header on Sunday. As a team the Reds are hitting .244 with Todd Frazier hitting .279, Billy Hamilton hitting .266 and Zack Cozart hitting .227. The Reds pitching staff has an ERA of 3.37 with the starters at 3.27 and the bullpen at 3.64. For game one against the Cardinals the Reds start Mike Leake who has lost his last two starts. For the season Leake has allowed 170 hits and 66 earned runs while striking out 129 over 165.2 innings for a 9-11 record and a 3.59 ERA.

St. Louis is 7-2 in their last nine home games, 6-2 as a home favorite, and 2-6 in game one of a series. Cincinnati is 4-11 as an underdog, 1-4 against the NL Central, and 2-5 in Leake’s last seven starts. Cincinnati is 2-5 in their last seven games against St. Louis.

In general teams playing on Sunday Night that travel don’t play well on Monday but in this spot facing Masterson I like the Reds chances here.

Pick:
Cincinnati Reds +128
