|Date & Time||Monday July 30, 2018, 8:10 PM (EDT)|
The Line: St. Louis Cardinals -140 / Colorado Rockies +120 --- Over/Under: 8.5
The Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals will duke it out in game one of a four game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Monday night.
The Colorado Rockies will look to stay hot after winning four straight games, including a 3-2 over Oakland on Sunday that completed the three game sweep. Tom Murphy led Colorado by going 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Ryan McMahon went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI of his own to round out Colorado’s scoring in the win. Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon each went 2 for 4 while Pat Valaika added a base hit as well to cap off the Rockies’ offense. German Marquez got the win to improve to 9-8 this season after allowing both runs on five hits while striking out eight over 7.2 innings of work. Wade Davis closed out the 9th for his 30th save of the season. Tyler Anderson will start the opener and is 6-3 with a 3.57 ERA and 112 strikeouts this season. This will be Anderson’s second career start against St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to bounce back after failing to complete a crucial sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night, losing the series finale by a final score of 5-2. Marcell Ozuna accounted for both Cardinal runs in the loss, going 1 for 4 with a homer and the two RBIs. Yadier Molina and Yairo Munoz each added a double while Matt Carpenter and Jedd Gyorko each contributed a base hit in the defeat. John Gant took the loss, falling to 3-4 this season after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out four over 4.1 innings of work. Carlos Martinez will start game one and is 6-6 with a 3.39 ERA and 89 strikeouts this season. In his career, Martinez is 3-1 with a 6.35 ERA and 38 strikeouts against Colorado.
Colorado is 7-3 in their last 10 road games and 18-5 in their last 23 games overall while the under is 4-0-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. St. Louis is 3-7 in Martinez’s last 10 starts and 1-4 in Martinez’s last 5 home starts while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. St. Louis is 4-1 in Martinez’s last 5 starts against Colorado.
I know Martinez is the staff ace right now, and St. Louis is coming off of a series win against a very good Cubs team. But we are getting one of the hottest teams in the league at plus money, starting a pitcher in Anderson who has allowed two runs or less in each of his last five starts. Martinez has been up and down this season, is coming off of a start where he allowed six runs, five earned, and although he has a good record against Colorado, Martinez still has a career ERA well above six against the Rockies in his career. The current Rockies lineup is hitting .312 against Martinez so I think the Rockies hold some serious value on Monday.
