The Houston Astros and the St. Louis Cardinals will meet up in MLB action on Saturday to continue their series.
In the Friday opener of this set, the Cardinals pushed through three runs in the bottom of the eighth and hung on for a 5-3 win.
For Saturday’s outing, the Astros will be going with Gerrit Cole in the start. Across his 136.2 innings and 11-5 mark so far, Cole has a 3.03 ERA with 205 Ks and 34 BBs.
Houston logged just five hits in the loss Friday. Michael Brantley was the lead contributor with three RBI and a two-run homer.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they’re sending out Daniel Ponce de Leon in the start Saturday. In 38.1 innings and a 1-0 record so far, de Leon has a 2.82 ERA with 44 Ks and 17 BBs.
St. Louis scored four runs in their final two at-bats for a come-from-behind win Friday. Paul Goldschmidt ripped a three-run homer for the Cards in that one with a pair of hits and two runs as well.
The Astros are 38-15 in their last 53 Saturday games and 51-24 in their last 75 in game two of a series. Houston is 5-1 in Cole’s last six starts with four days’ rest and 5-1 in his last six Saturday starts.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 2-5 in their last seven Saturday games and 5-1 in Ponce de Leon’s last six starts. St. Louis is 5-1 in Ponce de Leon’s last six starts on grass and the under is 7-3 in their last 10 in game two of a series.
Cole had a down start on the road versus the Rangers, with four earned in 6.0 innings on five hits. That said, in his two starts since he’s allowed just two earned in 14.0 innings and both were wins.
As for Ponce de Leon, he doesn’t have a decision since coming out of the pen again and has given up six earned over a total of 13.1 innings in three starts.
With Cole back in the groove again, I can’t find too many reasons not to take the Astros here.
