The Pittsburgh Pirates look to salvage the final game of their series at the St Louis Cardinals.
The Pittsburgh Pirates need some wins just to change the momentum right now but they have been in the wrong place at the wrong time which means they are in St Louis. The Red hot Cardinals squeezed past the Pirates 2-1 in eleven innings that saw an outstanding effort from Francisco Liriano go by the wayside. Liriano gave up a run over eight innings for a no decision with Jared Hughes taking the loss with a run scored in the 11th. The bats totaled 12 hits and five walks with Josh Harrison driving in Gregory Blanco with the lone run. Starling Marte posted three hits while every starter hit safely. The Pirates turn to Vance Worley on the hill to salvage the final game of the series with the Cardinals. Worley will be looking to rebound from a 4-0 defeat at Wrigley Field with all four runs plated on nine hits in six frames.
The St Louis Cardinals are the hottest team in baseball as it seems when pitching is needed they get it and when hitting is needed they get that as well. On Saturday the Redbirds needed pitching and John Lackey delivered with the lone run scored on six hits and a trio of bases on balls through six innings of work while six relievers putting up zeros. The Cardinals managed just six hits and four walks with Jon Jay and Matt Carpenter driving in runs. Peter Bourjos went 2-4 with a run with Pete Kozma going 1-1 with a run. The Cardinals charge right hander Michael Wacha with the pitching duties on Sunday. Wach defeated Philadelphia 11-5 last time out with four runs scored on six hits and two BB in 5.2 innings.
Pittsburgh are 7-15 in their last 22 games as an underdog and are 7-2 in Worley’s last 9 starts while going 7-2 in Worleys last 9 starts on grass. St Louis are 13-3 in their last 16 overall and are 13-3 in their last 16 games on grass while going 39-14 in their last 53 home games. It- is incredibly difficult to sweep a team and the Pirates are tough but I’ll back the hot squad…
