The Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in game three of their four game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Wednesday.
The Washington Nationals will be out to snap a three game losing streak following a 6-4 loss in game two on Tuesday. Bryce Harper had two RBIs, going 1 for 4 with a home run while Daniel Murphy and Matt Wieters each went 2 for 4 with an RBI to round out Washington’s scoring, with Wieters adding a double. Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto each added a double as well, while Adam Eaton and Ryan Zimmerman each added a base hit as well to round out the Nationals’ offense in the loss. Gio Gonzalez took the loss to fall to 7-9 this season after giving up five runs on five hits over just four innings of work. Jeremy Hellickson will start game three and is 5-2 with a 3.54 ERA and 62 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hellickson is 2-2 with a 4.13 ERA and 24 strikeouts against St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to win the series and push for the sweep on Thursday after their game two win on Tuesday, pushing their winning streak to seven games. Kolten Wong led the Cards by going 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, while starting pitcher John Gant added a home run of his own with two RBIs. Harrison Bader added an Rbi to cap off the Cardinals’ scoring while Paul DeJong added a double. Yadier Molina, Jose Martinez and Marcell Ozuna each had a base hit to finish off St. Louis’ offensive efforts in the win. Cant got the win to improve to 5-4 this season after giving up one run on four hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings of work. Jordan Hicks closed out the 9th for his 4th save of the season. Austin Gomber will start game three and is 2-0 with a 3.45 ERA and 26 strikeouts this season. This will be Gomber’s first career start against Washington.
Washington is 0-4 in Hellickson’s last 4 starts against a team with a winning record and 2-6 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 14-2 in Hellickson’s last 16 starts. St. Louis is 7-0 in their last 7 games overall and 5-1 in their last 6 home games while the under is 31-11-2 in their last 44 game 3 matchups. Washington is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams and 16-36 in the last 52 meetings between these two teams in St. Louis.
I know Gomber doesn’t have a ton of experience as a starter and Washington still has a dangerous lineup. However, we are getting a really low line with a red hot Cardinals team who are going up against a Washington squad that just can’t catch a break right now. Sometimes it’s as simple as taking the value when you get a solid price on a hotter team, so I’m not overthinking it and I’m laying the juice with the Cardinals here.
