The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in the finale of their three game MLB set from Tropicana Field in AL East division action on Thursday evening.
The Boston Red Sox will look to complete the sweep and stay hot after winning four straight and six of their last seven games following a 4-1 win in game two on Wednesday. Xander Bogaerts put up an RBI with a double while Eduardo Nunez added an RBI of his own in the win. Jackie Bradley Jr. chipped in a double while Christian Vazquez added a base hit to cap off the offense for Boston in the win. David Price gave up the one run on three hits while striking out nine over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Joe Kelly got the win to improve to 3-0 this season while Craig Kimberly struck out a pair in the 9th for his 15th save of the season. Rick Porcello will start game three and is 6-1 with a 3.39 ERA and 63 strikeouts this season. In his career, Porcello is 14-8 with a 3.23 ERA and 153 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping game two on Wednesday. C.J. Cron’s double led to the lone Tampa Bay run while Daniel Robertson and Christian Arroyo each added base hits as well to round out the offense for the Rays in the losing effort. Chris Archer gave up one run on four hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Alex Colome ended up with the loss after giving up three runs, one earned, in the top half of the 9th inning to fall to 2-5 this season. Blake Snell will start the finale and is 5-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 61 strikeouts this season. In his career, Snell is 2-3 with a 4.13 ERA and 28 strikeouts against Boston.
Boston is 7-2 in Porcello’s last 9 division starts and 6-1 in their last 7 games while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 road games. Tampa Bay is 5-2 in Snell’s last 7 home starts and 1-6 in their last 7 division matchups while the under is 5-0-2 in their last 7 home games. Boston is 4-0 in Porcello’s last 4 starts against Tampa Bay and 4-1 in his last 5 road starts against the Rays.
Snell has looked very good against Boston this year, getting a win and throwing a shutout in his other start against the BoSox this season. However, the Red Sox are back to rolling right now and even though Porcello has been shaky in terms of giving up runs as of late, he keeps finding ways to win and I think Boston gets it done again for the sweep on Thursday.
