Tampa Bay Rays +145 / Boston Red Sox -155 O/U: 8
The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays will match up on the MLB diamond to continue their series Tuesday.
In the Monday opener of this set, the Red Sox scored seven runs in the third inning and went on to a 9-4 win.
For Tuesday’s matchup, Boston is going with Chris Sale in the start. Over 117.2 innings and a 4-9 record thus far, Sale has a 4.05 ERA with 172 Ks and 29 BBs.
Boston put up 12 hits in the Monday win. JD Martinez hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBI on the night.
Over on the Tampa side, they’re sending out Yonny Chirinos in the start Tuesday. Over 112.0 innings and an 8-5 record so far, Chirinos has a 3.29 ERA with 97 Ks and 24 BBs.
Tampa managed nine hits on Monday but couldn’t score until the eighth inning. Travis d’Arnaud managed two hits, a double, an RBI and a run there.
The Red Sox are 5-11 in their last 16 Tuesday games and 5-13 in their last 18 in game two of a series. Boston is 0-5 in Sale’s last five Tuesday starts and the over is 4-0 in their last four in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 0-4 in Chirinos’ last four home starts and 0-4 in his last four with four days’ rest. Tampa is 0-4 in Chirinos’ last four starts on turf and 1-6 in his last seven overall.
Sale had a pretty ugly run of starts early this month, with 15 earned over a span of 16.1 innings. That said, he bounced back with zero earned over 6.0 innings in a win versus Toronto his last time out.
As for Chirinos, he had a string of six quality starts snapped by the Yankees his last time up (5.0 innings; four earned) and is just 1-3 since June 17.
Still, I like Chirinos to bounce back and pitch well here. This seems like an okay spot for a Tampa Bay value pick, but tread carefully since the Rays trends are skidding right now.
