Tampa Bay Rays -170 / Kansas City Royals +160 O/U: 8
The Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Rays will meet up on the MLB diamond to kick off their series on Monday.
The Royals are coming out of a four-game weekend set with the Yankees. Kansas City managed a win on Thursday 6-1, but then dropped the next three 6-2, 9-2 and 7-6.
For the Monday game, the Royals are sending out Brad Keller in the start. Across his 30.2 innings and 2-1 mark this year, Keller has a 2.64 ERA with 26 Ks and 17 BBs.
Over on the Rays’ side, they played the Red Sox this weekend. Boston gained some ground on Tampa in those games, as the Rays fell in all three 6-4, 6-5 and 4-3.
For the Monday game, Tampa Bay will be going with Yonny Chirinos in the start. Over his 19.1 innings and 3-0 mark this year, Chirinos has a 3.26 ERA and 19 strikeouts.
The Royals are 5-14 in their last 19 overall and 7-20 in the last 27 Monday games. KC is 9-4 in Keller’s last 13 starts and 5-2 in his last seven starts in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 5-1 in the last six in game one of a series and 17-4 in their last 21 Monday games. The under is 4-0 in Tampa Bay’s last four Monday games and 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings between these teams.
The Royals don’t have a whole lot to be happy about this year with their rocky start, but Keller is one of the shinier spots on the roster. Across five starts, Keller has only given up nine earned runs, and though his strikeout numbers are usually a little low—and his BBs a little high—he’s giving the team a good chance to win every time he goes out.
Make no mistake, in all likelihood Tampa will win this game, but with Keller on the mound it might be reasonable to take KC on a value play just in case.
