MLB | New York Yankees (76-72) at Tampa Bay Rays (72-78)

The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees face off on Monday at Tropicana Field for game one of their series.

The Tampa Bay Rays are usually strong contenders in the AL East but this season the were never really able to get into the mix. The Rays are 33-42 at home, 5-5 in their last 10 games and they are coming off of a win on Sunday. As a team the Rays are hitting .247 with James Loney hitting .289, ben Zobrist hiting .269, and Matt Joyce hitting .258. As a team the Rays pitching staff has an ERA of 3.51 with the starters at 3.45 and the bullpen at 3.64. For game one against the Yankees the Rays start Alex Colome who makes his second start of the year. For the season Colome has pitched 9.2 innings for a 1-0 record and a 2.79 ERA.

The New York Yankees are still in the post-season hunt but their hopes are hanging by a thread as it looks like they are really just playing out the final two weeks of Derek Jeter’s career. The Yankees are 38-37 on the road, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss on Sunday. As a team the Yankees are hitting .246 with Martin Prado hitting .304, Jacoby Ellsbury hitting .275, and Bret Gardener is hitting .268. The Yankees pitching staff has an ERA of 3.75 with the starters at 3.85 and the bullpen at 3.58. For game one against the Rays the Yankees start Chris Capuano who has four no decisions and a win in his last five starts. For the season Capuano has allowed 56 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 44 over 47.1 innings for a 1-2 record and a 5.13 ERA.

Tampa Bay is 2-5 as a favorite, 5-11 in heir last 16 Monday games, and 4-1 at home against a left-handed starter. New York is 8-3 as an underdog, 8-2 against a team with a losing record, and 4-0 in Capuano’s last four starts. New York has won four of their last five games against Tampa Bay.

The total looks to be a shade low and my free pick is going to be on the over. My stronger pick is on the wining side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as the App.
