The Line: Tampa Bay Rays / New York Yankees --- Over/Under:
The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in game one of a four game AL East division set from Tropicana Field in MLB action on Monday.
The New York Yankees will look to bounce back after failing to complete the sweep of the Orioles, dropping Sunday’s series finale by a final score of 6-3. Miguel Andujar went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres each added an RBI to round out the Yankees’ scoring in the win and Giancarlo Stanton chipped in a base hit to cap off New York’s offense as the Yankees had just four hits as a team in the losing effort. J.A. Happ allowed just one run on five hits while striking out seven, not factoring in the decision while A.J. Cole took the loss to fall to 3-1 this season. Luis Severino will start game one and is 18-8 with a 3.38 ERA and 213 strikeouts this season. In his career, Severino is 7-2 with a 3.06 ERA and 79 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to stay hot and keep their push for the 2nd wild card spot alive after taking down Toronto in their series finale on Sunday by a final score of 5-2. C.J. Cron and Brandon Lowe each had a home run and two RBIs with Cron going 2 for 4 with a double as well. Joey Wendle added an RBI double to round out Tampa’s offense in the win while Tommy Pham chipped in a base hit of his own to cap off the Rays’ offense as Tampa had just five hits as a team in the winning effort. Blake Snell picked up his 21st win to improve to 21-5 this season after throwing 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out 11. Sergio Romo closed out the 9th for his 22nd save of the year. Diego Castillo will start game one and is 3-2 with a 3.25 ERA and 58 strikeouts this season. This will be Castillo’s first career start against the Yankees.
New York is 12-4 in their last 16 division matchups and 39-15 in their last 54 games following a loss while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Tampa Bay is 25-7 in their last 32 games overall and 39-13 in their last 52 home games while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 division matchups. New York is 2-8 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams and 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Tampa Bay.
Severino may be the staff ace and has some solid numbers against the Rays in his career. However, despite giving up just one run in each of his last two starts, Severino has still been hittable this season and the Rays need to win out and have Oakland lose out to have any chance at making the playoffs, so as long as the Rays are still alive, they’re worth taking a flyer on on Monday.
