The Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers will meet up to continue their MLB series on Saturday.
In the Friday opener, the Astros scored four runs in the first two innings on the way to a 7-2 victory.
For Saturday’s game, the Astros will be sending out Gerrit Cole for the start. In his 25.0 innings and 1-2 record this year, Cole has a 3.24 ERA with 36 Ks and six walks.
Houston’s hitters got into the action big time on Friday. Jose Altuve hit a two-run shot and finished with three RBI. George Springer finished with two hits, a run and an RBI for the Astros.
Over on the Rangers’ side, they’re going with Adrian Sampson on Saturday. In 13.2 innings and an 0-1 record this season, Sampson has a 5.93 ERA with nine Ks and six walks.
The Rangers could only come up with four hits in the Friday loss. Two of those hits belonged to Joey Gallo, who logged an RBI and a run for Texas.
The Astros are 18-5 in their last 23 Saturday games and 47-19 in their last 66 in game two of a series. Houston is 9-2 in Cole’s last 11 starts with five days’ rest and 9-3 in his last 12 starts in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Rangers are 5-1 in their last six in game two of a series and 3-7 in their last 10 Saturday games. Texas is 1-4 in Sampson’s last five starts and the over is 5-2 in their last seven Saturday games.
Cole has lost a pair of games this year, but he’s also put up four straight quality starts and has allowed just nine combined runs in that quartet.
As for Sampson, he put up two good relief appearances to start the year but dropped seven earned in 4.0 innings versus Oakland. I expect Sampson to pitch better here, but with the way the Astros are playing to start the season I have to go with Houston on the victory.
