The Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers meet in game one of a three game AL West division set from Globe Life Park on Friday night.
The Oakland A’s will look to keep their momentum going after winning their four game set against Baltimore, taking the series finale on Thursday by a final score of 8-5. Khris Davis led the A’s with a pair of home runs and three RBIs while Josh Phegley had a homer and two RBIs. Marcus Semien, Kendrys Morales and Jurickson Profar each had an RBI with Semien adding a home run and a double while Morales belted a solo shot of his own. Chad Pinder went 2 for 4 while Robbie Grossman and Ramon Laureano each chipped in a base hit as well in the winning effort. Aaron Brooks got the win to improve to 2-1 after allowing three runs on three hits over six innings of work. Blake Treinen picked up his 4th save of the season as well by closing out the 9th. Mike Fiers will start game one and is 2-1 with a 5.94 ERA and 10 strikeouts this season. In his career, Fiers is 3-3 with a 6.16 ERA and 47 strikeouts against Texas.
The Texas Rangers will look to pick up some steam after earning a series split with Arizona, winning game two on Wednesday by a final score of 5-2. Logan Forsythe led the Rangers by going 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Hunter Pence hit a solo homer and Delino DeShields and Rougned Odor each had an RBI as well in the win. Elvis Andrus went 2 for 5 with a double and Isiah Kiner-Falefa each had a base hit as well in the win for Texas. Lance Lynn got the win to improve to 1-1 after allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine over six innings of work. Kyle Bird closed out the 9th for his 1st save of the year. Drew Smyly will start game one and is 0-1 with a 7.11 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. In his career, Smyly is 1-2 with a 5.55 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 10-3 in Fiers’ last 13 starts and 3-7 in their last 10 division games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Texas is 1-4 in their last 5 games overall and 4-10 in their last 14 division games while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 home games. The over is 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams and 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Texas.
Oakland tore the cover off of the ball in their last three games against Baltimore, but even with their offensive prowess up, I’m having a hard time putting my trust in Fiers after blowing up in his last start, allowing six runs in less than two innings in his first true road start this season. On the other hand, Smyly wasn’t that great either, allowing four runs in just over three innings. Both pitchers have a career ERA well over five against the opposing team as well, so this seems like a good spot for us to side with the over in my opinion.
