The Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers meet in the finale of their four game AL West division set from Globe Life Park in Arlington on Thursday.
The Oakland A’s will look to complete the sweep after taking the first three games of the series, including a 6-5 win in game three to push their winning streak to five games. Khris Davis led the charge, going 2 for 5 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Matt Olson added a double and an RBI to round out the scoring for the A’s in the victory. Marcus Semien went 2 for 5 with a double and Stephen Piscotty went 2 for 4 while Chad Pinder, Jed Lowrie, Matt Chapman, Mark Canha and Josh Phegley each added a base knock in the winning effort. Edwin Jackson gave up all five runs on seven hits while striking out four over 4.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Lou Trivino got the win to improve to 8-1 this season while Blake Treinen picked up his 26th save of the year. Trevor Cahill will start the finale and is 1-2 with a 2.95 ERA and 55 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cahill is 10-4 with a 2.81 ERA and 72 strikeouts against Texas.
The Texas Rangers will look to avoid the sweep and salvage a win after dropping game three on Wednesday. Robinson Chirinos led the Rangers with a three run home run, while Adrian Beltre and Rougned Odor each had an RBI with Beltre going 2 for 4 with a double. Elvis Andrus added a double of his own while Joey Gallo, Carlos Tocci and Willie Calhoun each had a base hit in the defeat. Martin Perez gave up one run on seven hits while walking three and striking out four over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Jose Leclerc took the loss to fall to 2-3 this season. Bartolo Colon will start game four and is 5-8 with a 4.85 ERA and 64 strikeouts this season. In his career, Colon is 10-6 with a 3.34 ERA and 96 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 6-2 in Cahill’s last 8 division starts and 25-7 in their last 32 games overall while the over is 6-1-1 in their last 8 road games. Texas is 1-6 in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 in Colon’s last 5 starts while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 home games. Oakland is 11-3 in Cahill’s last 14 starts against Texas and 6-1 in Cahill’s last 7 road starts against Texas.
It doesn’t matter what happens, the A’s just keep finding ways to win baseball games and are looking like a team that could pose a serious threat in October. As far as Thursday goes, we are getting a red hot A’s team with a pitcher on the mound in Cahill, who has owned the Rangers in an A’s uniform over the years, home or away, at an extremely decent price given the form of both teams coming into this one. Gotta like Oakland to stay hot and complete the sweep on Thursday.
