The Line: Toronto Blue Jays -111 / Tampa Bay Rays +101 --- Over/Under:
Up at Rogers Centre on Saturday, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays will be continuing their MLB set.
In the Friday opener, the Rays sprinkled in runs most of the game, holding the Jays to just three hits in a 7-0 shutout.
For Saturday’s game, the Rays are going with Ryne Stanek in the starting role. Stanek has been the starter in 18 games for Tampa this year and has a 2.63 ERA in those outings.
Leading the Rays in hitting this year is Matt Duffy, who came into this set on 115 hits, 41 runs and 32 RBI. On Friday, Duffy sat out but Michael Perez logged a two-run homer.
Over on the Jays’ side, they’re going with RHP Sam Gaviglio on Saturday. In his 78.0 innings and 2-4 mark this year, Gaviglio has a 5.08 ERA with 74 Ks and 27 BBs.
Heading into this series, the Jays’ Yangervis Solarte and Justin Smoak were tied for the team lead with 101 hits apiece. On Friday, Solarte sat and Smoak went 0-for-4.
The Rays are 1-6 in their last seven in game two of a series and the under is 16-6 in their last 22 in game two of a series. The under is also 5-2-1 in the Rays’ last eight Saturday games and they’re 8-20 in their last 28 road games.
Meanwhile, the Jays are 1-4 in their last five in game two of a series and 4-1 in Gaviglio’s last five home starts. Toronto is 1-5 in Gaviglio’s last six starts and 5-1 in his last five starts with five days’ rest.
It’s been a pretty rocky road for Gaviglio this season. Over his last six starts, he’s allowed fewer than three earned just once (one in 3.1 innings versus Boston on July 14), and has allowed 15 earned total over his last four starts. This might be a good spot to go with the Rays.
