Washington Nationals -135 / Atlanta Braves +115
The Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals meet in the opener of a three game NL East division set from Nationals Park on Friday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to keep the momentum going after winning their series with the Mets to start the week, including a 7-2 win in the rubber match on Wednesday. Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson each had a home run and two RBIs while Nick Markakis had a double and two RBIs of his own in the win. Ozzie Albies added a double and an RBI to round out Atlanta’s scoring in the winning effort while Austin Riley went 2 for 3 with a double and Tyler Flowers and Dansby Swanson each had base hits as well. Max Fried got the win to improve to 8-3 this season after allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Dallas Keuchel will make his long-awaited season debut after going 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA and 153 strikeouts for Houston last season. In his career, Keuchel is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts against Washington.
The Washington Nationals will look to build on their current four game winning streak after sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies with a 7-4 win in the finale on Thursday. Victor Robles went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs while Kurt Suzuki had a home run and two RBIs. Anthony Rendon went 2 for 3 with a solo home run and a double while Juan Soto added a double and an RBI of his own to round out the Nats’ scoring in the win. Howie Kendrick went 2 for 3 while Trea Turner and Michael A. Taylor each had base hits as well in the win. Erick Fedde gave up two runs on five hits while walking five over 3.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Javy Guerra got the win to improve to 1-0 while Sean Doolittle notched his 16th save of the year. Stephen Strasburg will start game one and is 7-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 115 strikeouts this season. In his career, Strasburg is 12-11 with a 4.01 ERA and 210 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 11-2 in their last 13 games overall and 12-4 in their last 16 road games while the over is 20-7-3 in their last 30 series opening matchups. Washington is 8-22 in their last 30 series opening matchups and 8-3 in their last 11 games following a win while the over is 5-1-2 in their last 8 games against a left-handed starter. Washington is 4-9 in Strasburg’s last 13 home starts against Atlanta.
Washington being favored kinda makes sense as the Nationals have their team leader in wins this season in Strasburg on the mound against Keuchel who has yet to make a start this season. However, Strasburg has a higher ERA at home than on the road this season with a 4.74 ERA at Nationals Park this season. Strasburg has also allowed 11 runs in his last two home starts spanning just 10 innings. I’m not normally a fan of laying this kind of juice with a pitcher making their debut this late on in the season, but getting Atlanta at plus money who are 14-4 in the month of June so far, seems too good to pass up, so I’ll take the Braves to draw first blood on Friday.
