The Line: Washington Nationals -139 / Atlanta Braves +129 --- Over/Under: 8.5
Saturday evening from Nationals Park, the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals will be picking up their MLB series once again.
In the Friday opener, the Braves scored three times in the fifth inning on the way to an 8-5 victory.
For the Saturday game, the Braves will be rolling out lefty Sean Newcomb. In his 105.0 innings and 8-5 record this year, Newcomb has a 3.51 ERA with 97 Ks and 52 BBs.
Leading the way in hitting for the Braves this year is Nick Markakis, who came into this set on 120 hits, 55 runs, 10 homers and 61 RBI. On Friday, Markakis logged a hit and a run.
Over on the Nats’ side, they’re sending out Gio Gonzalez on Saturday. Across 101.2 innings and a 6-6 record this year, Gonzalez has a 3.72 ERA with 94 Ks and 48 BBs.
Trea Turner led the way for Washington coming into this set on 103 hits, 55 runs, 11 homers and 39 RBI. In the opener, Turner hit a solo homer.
The Braves are 2-7 in their last nine in game two of a series and 2-6 in Newcomb’s last eight Saturday starts. Atlanta is also 1-4 in Newcomb’s last five road starts and 0-5 in his last five starts.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 1-4 in their last five Saturday games and 6-1 in Gonzalez’s last seven home starts. Washington is 4-1 in Gonzalez’s last five Saturday starts and 1-5 in his last six starts.
Newcomb has been pretty shaky lately, and he’s given up 13 earned over his last three starts in a span of 12.0 innings. As for Gonzalez, he’s been decent with seven earned over his last three starts in 16.0 innings. I’m going to go with the Nationals here based on the Gonzalez performance, but it should be a close game.
