The Line: Washington Nationals -103 / Chicago Cubs -107 --- Over/Under: 9
The Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals meet up for a single game as a makeup from Nationals Park in MLB action on Thursday.
The Chicago Cubs will look to bounce back after losing the rubber match of their series with Milwaukee by a final score of 5-1 on Wednesday. Kris Bryant went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to account for the Cubbies’ lone RBI in the loss, while Ben Zobrist, Kyle Hendricks, Tommy La Stella and Addison Russell each contributed a base hit in the losing effort for the Cubs. Hendricks took the loss, falling to 11-11 this season after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five over five innings of work. Mike Montgomery will start this game and is 4-5 with a 3.85 ERA and 72 strikeouts this season. This will be Montgomery’s first career start against Washington.
The Washington Nationals will look to play spoiler after winning their fifth straight game, completing the sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-1 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman each had a home run and two RBIs while Juan Soto added a solo homer to round out Washington’s scoring in the win. Anthony Rendon added a pair of doubles and Adam Eaton added a two-bagger of his own while Matt Wieters and Trea Turner each had a base hit in the winning effort. Stephen Strasburg picked up the win to improve to 8-7 this season after allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine over seven innings of work. Joe Ross will start this game and will be making his regular season debut in this one and was 5-3 with a 5.01 ERA and 68 strikeouts last season. In his career, Ross is 0-2 with a 3.44 ERA and 20 strikeouts against the Cubs.
Chicago is 2-6 in Montgomery’s last 8 starts and 19-8 in their last 27 games against the NL East while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 road games. Washington is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall and 6-2 in their last 8 Thursday games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games against the NL Central. The over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Washington.
Finally, the Nationals are playing like a team that wants to play in the postseason, the problem is that Washington is essentially done and it’s a case of too little too late. The other issue is that I’m not a fan of pitchers in a position like Ross, starting this late in a season against a Cubs team that needs a win in the worst way with Milwaukee nipping at their heels in the division race. I’m not going to touch this game but if I were to make a pick, I’d side with Chicago here.
