The Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals meet in the finale of their four game NL East division set in MLB action from Nationals Park on Monday afternoon.
The Miami Marlins will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping the first three games of the set, including a 9-6 loss in game three on Sunday. Brian Anderson and Neil Walker each had three RBIs with Walker homering while Anderson had a double. Harold Ramirez went 3 for 4 with a double while Rosell Herrera added a two-bagger of his own. Curtis Granderson, Starlin Castro, Austin Dean and Miguel Rojas each chipped in base hits as well to cap off Miami’s offense as a team in the losing effort. Caleb Smith tookt he loss, falling to 3-2 on the year after allowing five runs on five hits over three innings of work. Jose Urena will start game four and is 2-6 with a 4.30 ERA and 39 strikeouts this season. In his career, Urena is 4-2 with a 3.47 ERA and 34 strikeouts against Washington.
The Washington Nationals will look to complete the sweep after winning the first three games of the set following Sunday’s victory. Howie Kendrick had a home run and three RBIs while Brian Dozier and Anthony Rendon each had two RBIs with Dozier going 3 for 5 with a double. Juan Soto and Michael A. Taylor each had an RBI to round out Washington’s scoring as a team in the win, with Taylor adding a double. Adam Eaton went 2 for 4 with a double while Yan Gomes added a two-bagger of his own and Trea Turner chipped in a base hit to round out Miami’s offense as a team in the victory. Erick Fedde got the win on the mound to improve to 1-0 on the year after tossing five shutout innings while walking three and striking out four. Max Scherzer will start game four and is 2-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 96 strikeouts this season. In his career, Scherzer is 12-4 with a 3.28 ERA and 146 strikeouts against Miami.
Miami is 2-8 in Urena’s last 10 starts and 12-42 in their last 54 road games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 Monday games. Washington is 1-7 in Scherzer’s last 8 starts and 6-2 in their last 8 home games while the over is 9-0 in Scherzer’s last 9 starts against a team with a losing record. Washington is 7-1 in Scherzer’s last 8 starts against Miami and 7-0 in Scherzer’s last 7 home starts against Miami.
Miami and the plus money is tempting considering how Urena has pitched better lately but the problem is that the Marlins have been thoroughly outplayed in the first three games of the set, even with the rally attempt on Sunday, scoring six runs in the final two innings. Scherzer pitched phenomenally in his last outing, but the bullpen blew it for him, just like the bullpen almost gave it away on Sunday. It’s a dicey bet, but I like Scherzer to bounce back and stifle the Marlins again and to negate the heavy juice, since each of Washington’s last four wins against Miami have been by at least two runs, I’ll side with Washington on the RL.
