The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Sunday with a late start as they finish out their weekend series.
The Washington Nationals fell behind on Saturday but they came back with a vengeance winning easily against the Phillies. Jayson Werth had three hits including a home run and Denard Span, Ian Desmond, and Wilson Ramos each had two hits as the Nationals scored eight runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Taylor Jordan allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out three over 5.0 innings to not get a decision while Tanner Roark got the win and Rafael Soriano earned his 29th save. For Sunday’s game the Nationals start Stephen Strasburg who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Strasburg has allowed 105 hits and 46 earned runs while striking out 143 over 137.1 innings for a 5-9 record and a 3.01 ERA.
The Philadelphia Phillies are just in an awful rut and blowing the lead on Saturday has just become a typical representation of their play of late. On Saturday Domonic Brown had two hits including his 26th home run, Darin Ruf hit a home run, and Michael Martinez had two hits as the Phillies scored five runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Cliff lee allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Jake Diekman blew the save and took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season. For Sunday’s game the Phillies start Kyle Kendrick who is coming off of a win in his last start. For the season Kendrick has allowed 155 hits and 70 earned runs while striking out 86 over 144.1 innings for a 10-8 record and a 4.36 ERA.
Washington is 7-1 in their last eight home games against a team with a losing record, 1-5 in their last six games against a right-handed starter, and 1-5 in Strasburg’s last six home starts. Philadelphia is 8-22 in their last 30 road games, 3-16 in their last 19 games overall, and 12-4 in Kendrick’s last 16 starts against the AL East. Philadelphia is 1-6 in their last seven games in Washington.
This one should be a battle for the pitchers and my first FREE PICK is on the under. My second Free Pick is on the winning side and I will give out that FREE Pick on Sunday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
