Washington Nationals -185 / Pittsburgh Pirates +165
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals meet in the rubber match of their three game MLB set from Nationals Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to win the set after dropping game two on Saturday by a final score of 3-2. Melky Cabrera went 3 for 4 with a solo home run while Colin Moran had a double and an RBI to round out Pittsburgh’s scoring in the loss. Josh Bell added a triple and Erik Gonzalez belted a two-bagger while JB Shuck and starting pitcher Chris Archer each chipped in base hits as well in the defeat. Archer went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine, not factoring in the decision. Richard Rodriguez ended up with the loss, falling to 0-1 with his 1st blown save of the season as well. Jameson Taillon will start game three and is 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. In his career, Taillon is 0-1 with a 3.50 ERA and 17 strikeouts against Washington.
The Washington Nationals will look to win the series after evening up the series at one win apiece following Saturday’s victory. Adam Eaton and Howie Kendrick each hit solo blasts with Eaton going 3 for 4 at the dish. Kurt Suzuki added an RBI to round out the scoring for the Nats while Anthony Rendon added a double to cap off Washington’s offense as the Nationals mustered up just six hits as a team in the victory. Anibal Sanchez went seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, not factoring in the decision. Wander Suero got the win to improve to 1-0 while Sean Doolittle picked up his 1st save of the year. Max Scherzer will start game three and is 1-2 with a 3.32 ERA and 28 strikeouts this season. In his career, Scherzer is 5-2 with a 2.75 ERA and 96 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 0-4 in Taillon’s last 4 starts and 4-1 in their last 5 Sunday games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 road games. Washington is 23-11 in Scherzer’s last 34 home starts and 2-7 in their last 9 games following a win while the over is 8-0 in their last 8 Sunday games. The under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
The over may be worth a look as despite the fact that we have two solid pitchers, both have been hit hard to start the year. Pittsburgh and the plus money is also tempting, but Taillon has been sputtering lately, including allowing 6 unearned runs in just two innings in his last start. Scherzer had been a victim of no run support in his first two outings and finally got his first W last time out, and I think the Nationals build off of that to get Mad Max back to .500 with a series closing win here.
