The Line: Yan -265 / Dodson +225 -- Over/Under:
John Dodson and Petr Yan fight Saturday during UFC Fight Night 145 at the O2 Arena.
John Dodson enters this fight with a 20-10 record and has won 48 percent of his fights by knockout. Dodson has split his last eight fights and is coming off a September loss to Jimmie Rivera. Dodson is averaging 3.38 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 40 percent. Dodson is averaging 0.71 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 30 percent. Dodson has seen hit and miss results the last few years, but he’s never lost back-to-back fights in his career. Dodson is a very small fighter at just 5’3”, but he has a lot of power in his miniature frame and is one of the quickest fighters in the sport. Dodson has seen seven of his last eight fights end in decision, but he’s certainly capable of rocking some guys with one clean shot, and his lack of size makes him a really tough matchup for most opponents. Dodson defends takedowns well and is extremely effective on counters where he’s done a lot of his best work. Rush in on Dodson at your own risk, as his hands are always ready and he’s arguably the fastest fighter regardless of division. This will be Dodson’s first career fight in the Czech Republic.
Petr Yan enters this fight with a 11-1 record and has won 45 percent of his fights by knockout. Yan has won each of his last six fights and is coming off a December win over Douglas Silva de Andrade. Yan is averaging 7.06 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 41 percent. Yan is averaging 1.58 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 60 percent. Yan is now 3-0 under the UFC banner and two of those three victories have come by knockout. Yan is your typical tough Russian who has a strong chin and comes from a boxing and wrestling background. Yan is landing 67 percent of his strikes standing up, but he also has an effective ground and pound and is very dangerous with those elbows when he’s in the clinch. Yan is primarily a standup fighter and is more than willing to trade shots, as his combinations usually get the best of his opponents. Yan is a very accurate and clean striker who could fly up the rankings rather quickly at just 26 years old. This will be Yan’s first career fight in the Czech Republic.
This is going to be one of the best fights on the card, as both of these guys are athletic strikers with a high, aggressive work rate. Dodson has the speed advantage and his small frame is often tricky for his opponents. He’s such a counter machine and is certainly going to test Yan and his aggressiveness. The reason to back the Russian is because of his chin and the fact he’s the more polished striker with probably more pop in his hands. Yan will be able to trade strikes with Dodson without much of an issue, and his accuracy will be the difference if this fight goes to a decision. Yan can out-strike Dodson and land the cleaner shots that will make the difference.
Fun fight with a lot of shots involved, but Yan gets the best of it.
