The New Orleans Pelicans and the Atlanta Hawks lock up in NBA preseason action from McCamish Pavilion on Monday night.
The New Orleans Pelicans will look to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the preseason coming in the form of a 128-116 loss to the Bulls on Sunday night. Jrue Holiday led the Pelicans with 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting with a pair of threes, while Julius Randle had 15 points, 5 boards, and a team-high 5 assists. Anthony Davis had 13 points, 3 steals and a pair of blocks while Elfrid Payton led the Pelicans with 8 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Atlanta Hawks begin the 2018-19 campaign after finishing a disappointing 24-58 last season, resulting in the mutual parting of ways between Atlanta and then head coach Mike Budenholzer, opening up the head coaching spot for Lloyd Pierce. The big story for the Hawks this season, is the development of potential superstar guard Trae Young, who was acquired from Dallas for the rights to Luka Doncic, whom many considered to be the 1st name off of the board in the draft. Young led the nation in scoring for the Sooners last season with 27.4 points along with 8.7 assists. Young will have to fill the shoes of Dennis Schroder who was involved in a three-way deal with the Hawks, 76ers, and Thunder and led the Hawks with 19.4 points per game last season. Taurean Waller-Prince, Kent BAzemore and John Collins will be expected to lead the youth movement for the Hawks in what most likely will be a rebuild season in Atlanta. Only time will tell if the young core can blossom into a contender and if Young can be the leader that Atlanta selected him to be.
New Orleans is 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games overall and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games while the under is 4-2 in their last 6 road games. Atlanta is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall.
I know the Pelicans have the better lineup and already have a game under their belt, but I'm not sure why they're favored here. That first game happened last night and now New Orleans already has to play a back-to-back, travelling from Chicago to Atlanta. The Hawks may have some rust in the beginning, but these guys are itching to get back on the court, including Young who will be making his debut here. I think there's value to be had with the free bucket at home, and I'll take it
