The Memphis Grizzlies and the Indiana Pacers duke it out at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
The Memphis Grizzlies will be hoping to kick things off with a win after scraping together just 22 wins last season. Marc Gasol led the team with averages of 17.2 points per game, 8.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists, Tyreke Evans averaged 19.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists while Dillon Brooks averaged 11.0 points but the Grizzlies as a team just couldn’t stay healthy which hindered them all season. The biggest injury was Mike Conley who managed just 12 games in total but the good news is that he is back at full health to spearhead the offense that now includes Jaren Jackson Jr, Omri Casspi and Kyle Anderson. The only way is up for this team which is coming off their lowest win total since the 2007-08 season.
Meanwhile, the Indiana Pacers will be aiming to improve on last season’s performance as they finished the regular season with a 48-34 record before pushing the Cavaliers to seven games in the first round of the playoffs. Victor Oladipo had a breakout season as he led the way with averages of 22.7 points, 8.3 rebounds. 6.0 assists and a league-leading 2.4 steals. Bojan Bogdanovic, Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner each averaged 12.4 points per game while Thaddeus Young averaged 11.3 points. In terms of offseason moves, the Pacers shipped off Lance Stephenson to the Lakers and offered Turner a 4-year $80M contract extension.
Looking at the betting trends, the Grizzlies are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings, 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Indiana and the underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
You never know what to expect from teams playing their first games of the season, but the only way is up for the Grizzlies who were just plagued with injuries all of last season. The Pacers were one of the surprise teams in the Eastern Conference as they almost took down LeBron James and the Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs. Indiana won 27 of their 41 home games last season and I expect them to kick start their season with a home win against the Grizzlies who haven’t been healthy in a long time. I like the Pacers to get the win at home but I'm taking the Grizzlies with the points in what I think will be a close one.
