The Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers do battle at the STAPLES Center on Saturday night.
The Houston Rockets will be hoping to bounce back after getting blown out by the Pelicans in a 131-112 home loss in their season opener on Wednesday. Eric Gordon led the team in scoring with 21 points off the bench, Chris Paul and PJ Tucker each scored 19 points while James Harden racked up 18 points with nine rebounds and 10 assists. As a team, the Rockets shot just 42 percent from the field and 16 of 48 from the three-point line but this game was all about the Rockets’ terrible defense as they looked hopeless against the Pelicans, allowing them to score 71 points in the first half and at least 30 points or more in each quarter. Carmelo Anthony scored just nine points in his debut for the Rockets and he looked completely lost on the defensive end.
Meanwhile, there were also plenty of eyes on the new-look Los Angeles Lakers who opened their season with a 128-119 road loss at Portland on Thursday. LeBron James led from the front with 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, Josh Hart added 20 points off the bench, Brandon Ingram scored 16 points while Rajon Rondo chipped in with 13 points and 11 assists. As a team, the Lakers shot 48 percent from the field and just seven of 30 from the three-point line as they were good enough to stay close with the Trailblazers until the fourth quarter where they were outscored by 35-28. The Lakers will be disappointed with the loss as they held an early double-digit lead but they will be feeling good about their offense overall as they racked up an impressive 70 points in the paint, while showing some mettle to make a run late in the fourth quarter.
Looking at the betting trends, the Rockets are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings following a loss, 5-2 A TS in their last seven games following a double-digit home loss and 0-4 ATS in their last four games against a team with a losing record. The Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a loss and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against a team below .400.
Head to head, the Rockets are 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings overall and 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings in Los Angeles. The over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings overall and the favorite is 16-6 ATS in the last 22 meetings.
The season opener really couldn’t have gone much worse for the Rockets who would’ve come into the game feeling great about the acquisition of Anthony. As for the Lakers, they too will be feeling disappointed with their loss but they had plenty of positives from their season opener and probably would’ve won if that game was at home given how many quality shots they were able to create. Looking at the betting trends, you would have to lean towards the Rockets to bounce back here, but it won’t be with their defense so a bet on the over also looks like an option in this one.
