The Line: Memphis Grizzlies -5 -- Over/Under: 213.5
The Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies meet Friday in NBA preseason action at the FedExForum.
The Atlanta Hawks won their season preseason opener against the New Orleans Pelicans, 116-102. The Hawks are averaging 116 points on 45.7 percent shooting and allowing 104 points on 36.5 percent shooting. DeAndre' Bembry is averaging 20 points and four assists while John Collins is averaging 18 points and three rebounds. Alex Poythress is the third double-digit scorer and Trae Young is dishing eight assists. The Hawks had five double-digit scorers in their preseason opener while producing seven steals and 12 blocks. The defensive effort was highly impressive, especially considering they played an explosive offensive team. The Hawks have to be pleased with what they saw in their first game, particularly from their younger players who are expected to be the future of this franchise. We’ll see how long that sort of play continues from the Hawks. The Atlanta Hawks have split their last six preseason games.
The Memphis Grizzlies lost their preseason season opener against the Houston Rockets, 131-115. The Grizzlies are averaging 115 points on 47.1 percent shooting and allowing 131 points on 50 percent shooting. Mike Conley is averaging 16 points and two assists while Jaren Jackson Jr. is averaging 15 points and three rebounds. Chandler Parsons is the third double-digit scorer and Kyle Anderson is grabbing two rebounds. The Grizzlies were solid offensively in their opener, as six players scored at least nine points, they just ran into a buzzsaw of a Rockets team that couldn’t miss. It’s not often you see the Grizzlies top 100 points when Marc Gasol only scores scores once on seven field goal attempts. Despite the losing effort, the Grizzlies showed they’re capable of getting out of that grit and grind, low scoring style of basketball. The Memphis Grizzlies have split their last six preseason games. MarShon Brooks, Ivan Rabb and Yuta Watanabe are questionable.
The Hawks are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 road games and the under is 6-0 in Hawks last 6 Friday games. The Grizzlies are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 2 days rest. The Hawks are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Memphis and the under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
The Atlanta Hawks are the younger, more atheltic team and has more open playing time, so those are the teams you usually want to back in preseason action. Also, the underdogs have been covering machines in NBA preseason up to this point, so laying decent sized chalk probably isn't the best idea. So, I'll take a stab with the Hawks and the free buckets here.
