The Miami Heat play host to the Charlotte Hornets at the American Airlines Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Charlotte Hornets have been in a slump as they've lost seven of their past 10 games, but they will be looking to build some momentum after sneaking past the Wizards in a 116-110 road win on Friday. Kemba Walker led the team with 28 points and four assists, Jeremy Lamb added 18 points while Nicolas Batum and Tony Parker each scored 16 points. As a team, the Hornets shot 45 percent from the field and 14 of 31 from the 3-point line as they set the tone with 40 points in the first quarter to lead by as many as 21 points, but they had to scrap till the end as the Wizards rallied to cut the lead to just six points late in the fourth quarter. With the win, Charlotte improved to 31-37 overall and 10-23 on the road.
Meanwhile, the Miami Heat have been in decent shape as they've won six of their last eight games, but they will still be scratching their heads after falling to the Bucks in a 113-98 home loss on Friday after leading by as many as 20 points in the first quarter. Justise Winslow led the team with 20 points and five assists, Hassan Whiteside added 14 points with 11 rebounds while Dwyane Wade and Kelly Olynyk each scored 10 points. As a team, the Heat shot just 40 percent from the field and eight of 22 from the 3-point line as they stormed out to an early 20-point lead before they collapsed in the second half where they were outscored by 71-36 as they had no answer for Giannis Antetokounmpo who poured in 33 points with 16 rebounds and nine assists. With the loss, Miami fell to 32-36 overall and 16-20 at home.
Looking at the betting trends, the Hornets are 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a win, 2-5 ATS in their last seven Sunday games and 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall. The Heat are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games, 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a loss of more than 10 points and 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a double-digit loss at home.
Head to head, the under is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings, the road team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the Hornets are 2-6-1 ATS in the last nine meetings overall.
These two teams have already met three times this season with the Hornets leading the series by 2-1, but the Heat won by 91-84 less than two weeks ago and I'm expecting them to come out firing after blowing a massive chance to upset the league-leading Bucks on Friday. This should be another low-scoring affair, but the Heat are 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine meetings overall and they need this win to hang onto that eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, so that's where I'm leaning in this one.
