The New Orleans Pelicans play host to the Houston Rockets in NBA action at the Smoothie King Center on Sunday.
The Houston Rockets have been on a tear for a while now as they’ve won 13 of their last 15 games and they will be full of confidence after taking down the red-hot Spurs in a thrilling 111-105 home win on Friday. James Harden led the way with a career-high 61 points on 19 of 34 shooting, Chris Paul added 18 points with five assists while Clint Capela chipped in with seven points, 16 rebounds and four assists. As a team, the Rockets shot just 41 percent from the field and 14 of 37 from the 3-point line, as they squandered a 15-point halftime lead, only to get rescued by Harden who scored 27 points in the first quarter and 15 points in the final 6:15 to drag the Rockets over the line. With the win, Houston improved to 46-27 on the season and 27-10 at home which is good for third place in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Pelicans have been in a world of hurt as they’ve lost seven of their last eight games and they will be hoping to bounce back after getting routed by the Magic in a 119-96 road loss on Wednesday. Stanley Johnson led the team with 18 points off the bench, Ian Clark added 17 points with four assists while Frank Jackson chipped in with 14 points, but you just knew it was going to be a long night for the Pelicans as they never threatened after getting outscored by 68-46 in the first half. Anthony Davis was out for personal reasons, while Julius Randle finished with just six points on one of nine shooting. With the tough loss, New Orleans fell to 31-43 overall and 13-26 on the road.
Looking at the betting trends, the Rockets are 4-12-1 ATS in their last 17 games against a team with a losing record, 1-3-1 ATS in their last five against the NBA Southwest and the Rockets are 1-4-1 ATS in the last six against the Western Conference. The Pelicans are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games against a team above .600, 0-5 ATS in their last five home games and 1-7 ATS in their last eight games overall.
Head to head, the under is 38-18-1 in the last 57 meetings, the underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings and the Rockets are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings.
Here is another classic tale of two teams headed in opposite directions as the Rockets are red-hot at the moment while the Pelicans clearly have their eyes on the upcoming offseason. The Pelicans lead the season series by 2-1, but with the way these two have been playing, I’d be shocked if the Pelicans pull off the upset here while being so shorthanded. With that being said, I’m sticking with the Rockets to stay hot with a big win and cover here.
