The San Antonio Spurs invade Madison Square Garden to battle the New York Knicks on Sunday night.
The San Antonio Spurs have been in a real slump as they’ve lost five of their first six games on their annual rodeo trip and they will be looking to bounce back after falling to the Raptors in a 120-107 road loss on Friday. DeMar DeRozan led the way with 23 points and eight assists against his former team, Marco Belinelli added 21 points off the bench while Davis Bertans and Patty Mills scored 16 and 15 points respectively. As a team, the Spurs shot 48 percent from the field and 12 of 37 from the 3-point line as they hung with the Raptors in a close contest, but in the end it was the Raptors’ Kawhi Leonard who came through with the go-ahead basket at the clutch. With the tough loss, San Antonio fell to 33-27 overall and 11-20 on the road.
Meanwhile, the New York Knicks would’ve been celebrating during the All-Star break after snapping an ugly 18-game skid with a win over the Hawks, but they fell back down to Earth on Friday in a 115-104 home loss to the shorthanded Timberwolves. Damyean Dotson and Allonzo Trier each scored20 points, Kevin Knox added 18 points while DeAndre Jordan finished with a double-double of 16 points with 19 rebounds. As a team, the Knicks shot 42 percent from the field and 11 of 29 from the 3-point line and they got out to a hot start with 33 points in the first quarter, but they were always trailing after the Timberwolves poured on 37 points in the second quarter, all without their best player in Karl-Anthony Towns. With the loss, New York fell to 13-48 overall and 4-24 at home.
Looking at the betting trends, the Spurs are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games, 0-4 ATS in their last four games against a team with a losing record and 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall. The Knicks are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 home games, 2-7 ATS in their last nine games following a loss and 1-10 ATS in their last 11 home games against a team with a road record below .400.
The Spurs just haven’t been able to get it going on their road trip and you get the feeling they should be a little weary by this stage, but not many teams are losing to the Knicks these days, so they’re definitely favorites here. The will be the seventh straight road game for the Spurs, but they have to like their chances against a new-look Knicks team who have lost 18 straight home games. Hard to lay this many points, but it’s even harder to back the Knicks, so I’m taking the Spurs to get a much-needed win and cover here.
