Strengths: Byron Jones lit up the NFL combine with a 44.5-inch vertical jump, 147-inch broad jump and 3.94 second 20-yard shuttle. Jones is an athletic freak and has above-average recovery speed. Jones has a smart football player with great instincts. Jones has experience playing the safety position. Jones has great ball skills and takes the right angle to make a play. Jones is a reliable tackler and doesn’t mind getting dirty in run support. Byron Jones is a leader on and off the field, works hard and comes with zero baggage. Jones is a guy who leads by example and not exactly by his words.
Weaknesses: Byron Jones isn’t the most physical player despite his solid frame. There’s also questions whether Jones will go back to safety or remain a cornerback at the next level. Jones can be a little stiff when changing directions. Jones has a history of shoulder injuries that forced him to miss a chunk of last season.
Projection: Byron Jones is a first round pick simply of his elite athleticism and potential to be a great defensive back. Marcus Peters is the best cornerback in this draft, but Jones isn’t too far behind, as he’s a flat out freak and can play multiple positions. Jones is a safe prospect who should carve out a very successful career in the NFL.
