NFL | Marcus Mariota Player Profile

Marcus Mariota

School: Oregon Ducks

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 222

Position: Quarterback

Career Stats: 10,796 passing yards, 105 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Strengths: Marcus Mariota is one of the fastest quarterbacks I’ve seen in a while, as he 4.52 40-time at the combine was the fastest among quarterbacks this year. Mariota certainly fits this new era of football where the quarterbacks are the primary playmakers. He’s a real threat to burn your defense when he’s looking to run. Mariota also makes great decisions with the football, has a high football IQ and almost never got hurt in his college career despite running the ball a ton. The main thing that impresses me most with Marcus Mariota is his maturity and the fact he never gets too high or too low. There are zero worries with Mariota as far as off-the-field are concerned, and he’s a natural born leader.

Weaknesses: The main question with Marcus Mariota is he really a system quarterback? Sure, Mariota is smart enough to figure things out and adapt. However, Mariota’s entire career was spent in the shotgun and without huddling up. It’s going to take some time adjusting to running plays under center, and possibly even announcing the play to his teammates in a huddle. Mariota also has to improve his accuracy in the pocket and his ball placement overall.

Projection: I think it’s safe to say that Marcus Mariota is going to be a Top 10 pick and the future of a team’s franchise. Yes, there are system questions, but Mariota has way too much upside and is smart enough to figure things out. Mariota is likely going to be a boom or bust pick but there’s too much to like not to take a chance on him if you need a QB.
