The San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers play a Thursday preseason game at Levi's Stadium.
The San Diego Chargers are 2-1 in preseason play and are coming off a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. With Philip Rivers out, the Chargers will turn to backup quarterbacks Brad Sorensen and Kellen Clemens for this contest. That duo completed 50 percent of its passes for a touchdown in the Chargers last game. Running back Javontee Herndon is showing his versatility this preseason and could be San Diego’s X-factor on offense, while wide receiver Javontee Herndon could see playing time all over the place this season. Defensively, Nick Dzubnar led San Diego in its last game with six tackles, Adrian Phillips had a pass deflection and Kyle Emanuel had a sack.
The San Francisco 49ers are 1-2 in preseason play and are coming off a loss to the Denver Broncos. Colin Kaepernick will prepare for the season opener, which means we’ll see a whole lot of Blaine Gabbert and Dylan Thompson at quarterback. Gabbert is coming off a game in which he completed nine of 11 passes for 96 yards. Rookie running back Mike Davis has played well in a limited role and wide receiver Bruce Ellington is coming off a solid performance last week. Defensively, NaVorro Bowman led San Francisco in its last game with nine tackles, Dontae Johnson had a pass deflection and Corey Lemonier had a sack.
The Chargers are 10-1-1 ATS in their last 12 games in September and 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The 49ers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games and 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Chargers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
The 49ers have some interesting offensive players looking to make the roster, and Gabbert hasn't exactly stunk up the joint this preseason. I'll side with the 49ers at home here.
