The Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets meet in a week 1 AFC East division matchup in NFL action from MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Buffalo Bills will hope to carry over a strong preseason performance to the regular season, finishing the preseason with a perfect 4-0 record after a 27-23 win over Minnesota in their preseason finale last time out. Tyree Jackson threw for 175 yards and a touchdown on 22 of 33 passing while leading the Bills in rushing as well with 78 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Ray-Ray McCloud led Buffalo with 5 receptions for 48 yards and Nick Easley had 4 grabs for 41 yards while David Sills V had Buffalo’s lone touchdown reception. Marcus Murphy chipped in a late 79-yard punt return touchdown to help Buffalo’s late rally while L.T. Walton added a sack and Lafayette Pitts and Siran Neal had an interception. Jaquan Johnson and Tyrel Dodson shared the team-high with 9 tackles in the victory.
The New York Jets will look to start the year strong after finishing the preseason even at 2-2, finishing with a 6-0 win over Philadelphia in their preseason finale in their last outing. Davis Webb threw for 176 yards and 2 interceptions on an efficient 18 of 23 passing while Luke Falk had 91 yards on 13 of 18 passing and Trevor Siemian had 37 yards on a perfect 5 of 5 passing. Elijah McGuire led the Jets on the ground with 29 rushing yards while Valentine Holmes, Josh Bellamy, Eric Tomlinson and Elijah McGuire each had a team-high 5 receptions with Holmes leading the way with 55 receiving yards and Bellamy coming not far behind with 52 receiving yards. Defensively, Kyle Phillips had a pair of sacks and Marcus Cooper logged an interception while Blake Cashman had a team-high 4 tackles and a forced fumble that Frankie Luvu recovered.
Buffalo is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games on turf and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 week 1 matchups while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 road games. New York is 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 division games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The underdog is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
The Jets with a low line at home is kind of tempting considering that Sam Darnold may be a slightly better passer than Josh Allen. The Jets also have a new X-factor in their offense in LeVeon Bell that will be key in their offense right away. However, the road team won both meetings last season and the underdog’s had a ton of success in this matchup. Not to mention that Allen is the more mobile of the two quarterbacks and that could stretch the field for Buffalo to take advantage of one of New York’s weaknesses and that’s their secondary. I just think there might be something to Buffalo’s strong preseason. Yeah I know it’s preseason, but the Bills rallied with 21 unanswered points in the final 4 minutes of their last game against Minnesota to show some fight and I think they start the season with a bang so I’ll take the Bills and the points in a game I see Buffalo winning outright.
