The Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals play a preseason game Friday night at U of Phoenix Stadium.
The Oakland Raiders have become a trendy pick this season to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Derek Carr is expected to take another step in the right direction and another season of Amari Cooper makes that WR-QB tandem scary. However, for this game, you're going to see a lot of Matt McGloin and rookie quarterback Connor Cook, as they battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Defensively, The Oakland Raiders are very young and exciting and have a few guys who look to earn playing time including rookies Karl Joseph and Shilique Calhoun. We’ll also see Bruce Irvin for the first time in Oakland.
The Arizona Cardinals have a chance to make history and reach the playoffs for a third straight season. The Cards offense is absolutely loaded with Carson Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald and others. In this game, you’re going to get a lot of backups Drew Stanton, Matt Barkley and rookie Jake Coker. There’s not a lot of experience behind Palmer at quarterback, but Stanton does have double-digit years in the league, so he’s the overwhelming favorite for the No. 2 job. Defensively, the Arizona Cardinals will be keeping a close eye on rookie defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, who has a chance to be special if he can keep his head on straight.
The Raiders are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Cardinals are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games on grass. The Raiders are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
Stanton is easily the best backup quarterback in this contest and should get a lot of reps after Palmer plays a series or two. I don't trust the Raiders backups much given the limited playing time McGloin has received. I'll take the Cardinals and the small line at home.
