Los Angeles Rams -3 -- O/U: 50.5
The Los Angeles Rams and the Carolina Panthers kick off their respective 2019 regular seasons by meeting in a week 1 NFL matchup from Bank of America Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Los Angeles Rams will look to start the season on a high note after rattling off back-to-back wins to finish the preseason at 2-2 following a 22-10 win over the Texans in their last outing. Brandon Allen threw for 120 yards and 2 interceptions on 12 of 17 passing while John Wolford had 105 yards and 2 scores on 8 of 15 passing. Justin Davis led the Rams on the ground with 78 rushing yards and a touchdown while KhaDarel Hodge had a team-high 5 grabs for 76 receiving yards. Nsimba Webster and Kendall Blanton each had a receiving touchdown in the winning effort for L.A. Defensively, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo had a pair of sacks and a forced fumble while Boogie Roberts also had a sack and Jake Gervass and Ramon Richards each had an interception. Ketner Kupp led the Rams on defense with 6 tackles in the victory.
The Carolina Panthers also finished the preseason on a high-note after a 25-19 win over Pittsburgh to finish the preseason at 2-2. Will Grier threw for 189 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 11 of 18 passing while Taylor Heinicke had 89 yards, 2 touchdowns and a pick on 7 of 10 through the air. Elijah Holyfield led the Panthers on the ground with 8 carries for 36 yards while DeAndrew White led Carolina’s receiving corps with 4 catches for 94 yards. Temarrick Hemingway, Aldrick Robinson and Jordan Scarlett each had a receiving touchdown as well in the victory for Carolina. Defensively, Andre Smith and Marquis Haynes each had a pair of interceptions while Christian Miller had a sack and Jordan Kunaszyk tied the aforementioned Smith with 4 tackles as well as recording an interception.
Los Angeles is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against the NFC and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 road games. Carolina is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 home games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 week one matchups. Los Angeles is 1-6-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams and 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Carolina.
A home dog is always a tempting play, especially in week 1 where anything can really happen and it’s hard to get a feel for the environment. The Panthers have also had a strong history against the Rams based on head-to-head trends. However, Cam Newton’s been dealing with a foot injury, and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this season is the Los Angeles Rams revenge tour, playing with a chip on their shoulder after many criticized their performance or lack thereof in the Super Bowl loss to New England. I just think this has the potential to be a shootout, but side-by-side, the Rams are the better equipped team if that’s what ends up happening, so I’ll lay the field goal with the Rams to start the season with a bang here.
