The Line: Cleveland Browns -2 -- Over/Under: 43.5
The Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns meet Thursday at FirstEnergy Stadium for their first preseason game.
The Chicago Bears are 2-1 in the preseason with their most recent game being a blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, 34-6. The Bears will go back to playing their backups for much of the game, as Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and the rest of the gang will likely sit this action out. That means more playing time for guys like Jimmy Clausen, who has been solid this preseason, completing a high percentage of his passes and tossing two touchdowns. Clausen beat out Jordan Palmer for the backup quarterback job and should see the bulk of the playing time in this contest. Defensively, the Chicago Bears have allowed 81 points in three games and forced three turnovers. Willie Young had six tackles and a sack in his last game.
The Cleveland Browns are 0-3 in the preseason and two of those three losses were by one point. While usually the last preseason game is dreadful to watch, there’s a good chance you’re going to get a ton of Johnny Manziel in this contest with Brian Hoyer being named the starter. Manziel has scored two total touchdowns in the limited action he’s seen this preseason but could put on a show if he’s given the bulk of the playing time here against other backups. The Cleveland Browns have scored 14 or less points in two of their three preseason games and turned the ball over twice in their loss to the St. Louis Rams. Defensively, the Browns have allowed 70 points and forced seven turnovers. In his last game, Christian Kirksey led the Browns with seven tackles and came away with an interception.
Manziel showed play this game with a chip on his shoulder after not really getting a fair shot at the starting job. I like the Browns to finally win a preseason game and cover the small chalk.
