The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles open their preseason Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are feeling good about themselves after finishing 6-10 last year and hope to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. The Bucs will go as far as quarterback Jameis Winston improves, and he should be able to build on a solid rookie season. However, for this game, you’re sure to see a lot of Mike Glennon and Ryan Griffin, two guys fighting for the second spot on the depth chart. Defensively is where things get interesting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the preseason, as rookie cornerback Vernon Hargreaves is hoping for a starting spot and defensive end Noah Spence has a chance to prove he was one of the big steals in the 2016 draft.
The Philadelphia Eagles are in rebuilding mode with Chip Kelly out and Doug Pederson in the drivers seat. The Eagles hope Sam Bradford can become a more consistent quarterback and make players around him better. For this game, Philly is sure to play a lot of Chase Daniel and rookie Carson Wentz. Wentz, who was drafted second overall, is currently third on the Eagles depth chart, which is kind of surprising given everything Philadelphia traded to get him. Defensively, Jalen Mills has a chance to crack the rotation for playing time in the secondary and rookie defensive end Alex McCalister could be a surprise later in the game. The Philadelphia Eagles have a lot of openings and guys with a chance to fill those voids.
The Buccaneers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games. The underdog is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
Teams with question marks usually end up doing well in the preseason, as guys aren't just fighting for playing time, but starting and key spots. The Philadelphia Eagles are one of those teams that could shine in the preseason given all the holes on the roster. I also like Daniel as a backup.
Give me the Eagles and small line.
