The Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts meet Saturday in NFL preseason action at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Cleveland Browns are fresh off a 30-10 beatdown win over the Washington Redskins. Garrett Gilbert and Baker Mayfield combined for 212 passing yards and one touchdown. D'Ernest Johnson led the Browns with 23 yards on five carries, while Rashard Higgins had 98 receiving yards and one touchdown on five receptions. Defensively, J.T. Hassell led the Browns with five tackles, Devaroe Lawrence had one sack and Wyatt Ray had one tackle for loss. The Cleveland Browns got contributions from every unit, including a punt return touchdown from Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi, who has a feel good story of simply making the roster. It’s preseason, but the comfortable victory likely feeds into those increased expectations for a previously struggling franchise. The Cleveland Browns have won eight of their last nine preseason games.
The Indianapolis Colts are coming off a 16-24 loss to the Buffalo Bills in their preseason opener. Chad Kelly and Phillip Walker combined for 206 passing yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. Kelly led the Colts with 53 yards and one touchdown on four carries, while Daurice Fountain had 63 receiving yards on five receptions. Defensively, E.J. Speed led the Colts with six tackles, Carroll Phillips had two sacks and Al-Quadin Muhammad had one tackle for loss. The Indianapolis Colts seem to live and die off the play and health of Andrew Luck, so as long as he’s ready to go for the regular season, this team has nothing to worry about. However, Kelly looked good through his reps and if he’s able to become a consistent backup, the Colts could have something there given Luck’s injury history. The Indianapolis Colts have won five of their last seven preseason games.
The Browns are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games on fieldturf and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Colts are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games on fieldturf. The home team is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings. The under is 3-1-1 in Browns last 5 games overall. The under is 7-2 in Colts last 9 games overall.
Luck won't practice this week due to a calf injury, which means he's probably not playing in this game. The Cleveland Browns got production in all there areas of the game in their preseason opener and have a bit of a swagger to them right now. The Browns entered the season with increased expectations and we're seeing a bit of a pep in their step as they take the field. That can become contagious and can last a while. I'll take a shot with the Browns and the free points.
