Last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars finished 5-11, which was the most successful season since 2011. The Jaguars are slowly building through the draft and are starting to see some progress being made and excitement is quietly starting to build. Baby steps, baby steps.
Here is your 2016 Jacksonville Jaguars NFL preview.
Key Player Losses: Honestly, the Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t lose a single key player on the offensive side of the ball. It’s almost like last years entire team is returning. The two players you could list are defensive ends Andre Branch and Chris Clemons, a duo that did combine for seven sacks and 31 tackles. However, the Jags have to feel real comfortable with where they’re at in keeping the main core intact.
Key Player Additions: Malik Jackson was key in helping the Broncos win the Super Bowl last year and will be expected to anchor Jacksonville’s defensive line. Tashaun Gipson is a playmaker safety who has 14 interceptions and 22 pass deflections in four seasons. Prince Amukamara is also a reliable cornerback with a Super Bowl ring under his belt, so he brings a lot to the Jacksonville secondary. Running back Chris Ivory was a Pro Bowl selection last year for the Jets and adds some firepower to the Jaguars young backfield.
Draft: Jalen Ramsey was arguably the best defensive back in last years draft and is somebody who can play right away and contribute at a high level. Myles Jack was a first round talent at linebacker but slipped due to injuries. Jack has the potential to be a historic steal if he can stay healthy. Sheldon Day is a solid pass rusher who also fell due to injuries, and Yannick Ngakoue adds even more depth to a defensive front that’s also getting Dante Fowler Jr. back in the mix.
Outlook: The Jacksonville Jaguars are building a very impressive football team that could surprise some people as early as this season. I really like the direction this team is going and if Blake Bortles can make strides this year, the Jags could sneak into a wild card spot. The Jags are probably a year or two away from really putting everyone on notice, but eight-nine wins this season wouldn't surprise me at all. Jacksonville is a team to watch closely.
