The Line: Minnesota Vikings +3 -- Over/Under:
The Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions face off on Sunday in Minnesota for a NFC North NFL Week 6 matchup.
The Minnesota Vikings are 2-3 so far this season and every week they seem to just look like a different team on the field. In week one the Vikings blew out the Rams, last week the Vikes were getting crushed by the Packers. The issue for the Vikings have happened at QB where they appear to have found an answer in rookie Teddy Bridgewater but without Bridgewater last week the offense was ineffective but he should be ready to go here. Jerick McKinnon has added some spark to the rushing game averaging 5.5 yards per carry though Matt Asiata has gotten the bulk of the carries. Greg Jennings has 17 receptions and Cordarelle Patterson has 15 but the offense looked inspired when Bridgewater last played. The Vikings have a minus two-turnover ratio and Robert Blanton leads Minnesota with 39 tackles, Everson Griffen has three sacks, and Harrison Smith has three interceptions. It’s tough to figure out exactly what we are going to see from the Vikings on a week-to-week basis.
The Detroit Lions are 3-2 for the season and are coming of off a tough loss to the Bills on Sunday at home. The Lions played well but it looked like all of their injuries just caught up with them at once and throw in a few dropped easy catches and it let the Bills to catch up and win. Matthew Stafford has completed 63.1 percent of his passes with six touchdowns and four interceptions. Reggie Bush had to leave last game with an injury and he is questionable and Joique Bell didn’t play last week due to a concussion and while George Winn is a nice story he doesn’t seem to be a full time answer. Calvin Johnson has been gimpy all season and he may not play at all this week so it could be all on Golden Tate once again to be the primary receiver along with tight end Eric Ebron. The Lions are minus two in turnover ratio and the defense is led by DeAndre Levy who has 51 tackles, Ndamukong Suh who doesn’t have numbers but who always needs to be accounted for, and George Johnson who has 2.5 sacks. The Lions kicking game has been horrific and they will need to find an answer as they haven’ found one yet.
Minnesota is 5-1 against the spread in their last six home games, 6-1 against the spread following a loss, and 6-2 against the spread against the NFC. Detroit is 6-2 against the spread against the NFC North, 2-5 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 2-5 against the spread following a loss. The home team is 5-2-2 against the spread in the last nine meetings of these two.
It’s clear Detroit is the better team on paper but the injuries make them a different team and if Bridgewater plays which we have to guess he will the Vikings have the edge here and are my pick. Pay attention to the injury report and check back as it updates as I will update this pick if we have any major changes.
