The Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings meet Thursday in week 4 of the NFL preseason at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Miami Dolphins are 1-2 in preseason play and their starters will be getting ready for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers week 1. This game will feature a lot of Matt Moore at quarterback, while David Fales and Brandon Doughty fight for the third string spot. Running backs Damien Williams and Kenyan Drake continue to fight for carries behind Jay Ajayi, and wide receiver Jakeem Grant hopes to be that versatile player who sees spot time on offense and special teams. The backup OL also needs to show improvement given the injury history to the starting unit. I’m sure the Dolphins would love to see more consistency from their backup defense, as Miami has allowed a combined 69 points in their last two games. The Miami Dolphins may give the newly signed linebacker Rey Maualuga some minutes considering he has yet to play, and that could give them much needed depth in the middle.
The Minnesota Vikings are 2-1 in preseason play and their starters will be getting ready for the New Orleans Saints week 1. This game will be led by backups Case Keenum and Taylor Heinicke, and Keenum is coming off a game in which he completed 10 of 14 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The backup QB duo overall has combined for four touchdowns and two interceptions in the first three preseason games. This is also a chance for guys like running back Jerick McKinnon to earn playing time after Bishop Sankey had surgery on his torn ACL. Defensively, the Vikings are coming off a game in which they allowed 31 points, but they did have four tackles for loss. The Minnesota Vikings have won 10 of their last 12 preseason games.
The Dolphins are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games on fieldturf. The Vikings are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 games on fieldturf, 22-7 ATS in their last 29 home games and 38-17 ATS in their last 55 games overall. The under is 7-3 in Vikings last 10 Thursday games and the over is 6-1 in Dolphins last 7 games overall.
The Minnesota Vikings have been one of the better preseason teams in the league the last few years, winning 10 of their last 12 games. The Dolphins have struggled on defense all preseason long and that's not going to change with their starters not playing a lick in this contest. You have to ride the hot hand and back the Vikings in yet another meaningless contest.
