NFL | Denver Broncos (6-1) at New England Patriots (6-2)

The New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos face off on Sunday in a Week 9 NFL AFC matchup of first place teams.

The New England Patriots are in first place in the AFC and despite a rash of big injuries and talks of them aging and at the end of their run, the Pats continue to win football games. The Patriots offense capitalizes on their opportunities scored a 3rd best in the NFL 29.8 points per game though averaging 10th best 363.1 yards per game. QB Tom Brady is doing it again completing 64.4 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and just two interceptions. With injuries in the backfield the primary running back duties have fallen to Shane Vereen who is averaging 4.8 yards per carry and who has caught 26 passes. Julian Edelman has 45 receptions to lead new England and Rob Gronkowski has 40 receptions with seven of them going for touchdowns. The New England defense has been in the middle of the pack in the NFL rankings allowing 22.1 points and 340.5 yards per game but the plus 11 turnover ratio has been a difference maker. Jerod Mayo is out for the rest of the season so Jamie Collins leads in tackles with 50, Chandler Jones has 4.5 sacks, and Dont’a Hightower has 43 tackles and 3.5 sacks. The Patriots players change but they results are still the same, winning teams.

The Denver Broncos have just one loss this season and they lead the AFC West. The Broncos seem to be rolling on both sides of the ball scoring 32 points per game that is the best in the NFL and gaining 398.4 yards per game. Peyton manning still appears to have something left in the tank completing 69 percent of his passes for 22 touchdowns and just three interception while being sacked just eight times. Ronnie Hillman has gotten the most carries for the Broncos averaging 4.7 yards per carry and Montee Ball is struggling averaging 3.1 yards per carry. The Broncos receivers are having big years with Demaryius Thomas catching 47 passes with six touchdowns, Emmanuel Sanders catching 47 passes with four touchdowns, and Julius Thomas catching 30 passes with nine touchdowns. Defensively the Broncos are allowing 20.3 points and 315. Yards per game both near the top of the rankings in the NFL. Brandon Marshall has 57 tackles, Nate Irving has 42 tackles, and Von Miller has nine sacks. Denver is looking to atone for last season’s blowout loss in the Super Bowl.

New England is 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 home games, 2-5 against the spread against the AFC, and 5-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Denver is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games, 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games, and 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Denver is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games against New England.

New England is a dog at home here but they always seem to get it done in their own stadium regardless of who they playing and I don’t see it being any different this time.
