The Line: New York Giants -3 -- Over/Under: 44
The New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles face off on Sunday in a week 9 NFL NFC East rivalry game.
The New York Giants are 4-3 this season and return to the field after a bye week after beating the Rams in London. The Giants offense has picked it up somewhat primarily in the passing game but they are still averaging just a 26th ranked 19 points per game and are dead last in rushing averaging just 70.3 yards per game on the ground while their minus 7 turnover ratio doesn’t help either. New York QB Eli Manning has completed 64.8 percent of his passes with 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions and he has been sacked just 10 times, far less than in previous seasons. Rashad Jennings has 142 yards on the ground and a touchdown and Shane Vereen has 147 yards and a touchdown but it doesn’t get it done while Odell Beckham has 40 receptions and 3 touchdowns and Sterling Shepard has 31 catches and 2 touchdowns. The Giants defense has carried the day allowing 20.1 points and 361 yards per game with 6 interceptions, 5 fumble recoveries, and 5 sacks. Landon Collins leads the Giants defense with 57 tackles, Jonathan Casillas has 56 tackles, and Keenan Robinson has 37 tackles. The Giants are art a pivotal point in the season and if they can string some wins together they could land in the playoffs.
The Philadelphia Eagles are 4-3 this season with all of their losses coming on the road. The Eagles offense has mode the most out of the field position they have started at averaging 25.6 points and a 28th ranked 317.7 yards per game as they have been helped out by their plus 6 turnover ratio. Philly QB Carson Wentz has completed 65.8 percent of his passes with 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions and he has been sacked 15 times but he has looked very much like a rookie in all 3 of his last road games. Ryan Mathews is the Eagles top rusher with 272 yards and 4 touchdowns and Darren Sproles still can do it all with 228 rushing yards and 22 receptions while Jordan Matthews has 36 receptions and 3 touchdowns. The Eagles defense is allowing a 4th best in the NFL 16.7 points and an 8th best 328.9 yards per game as they are 5th in the NFL against the pass and they have 6 interceptions, 9 fumble recoveries, and 22 sacks. Rodney McLeod leads the Philadelphia defense with 49 tackles and 3 interceptions, Nigel Bradham has 43 tackles, and Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox have 4 sacks each. The Eagles defense has set up the offense and the offense hasn’t made the mistakes that have put their defense in bad spots.
New York is 1-3-1 against the spread against the NFC, 1-4 against the spread following a bye week, and 3-1-1 against the spread after allowing less than 90 yards rushing in their previous game. Philadelphia is 3-7 against the spread against the NFC, 12-3-1 against the spread in their last 16 games against the Giants, and 8-1 against the spread in New York. The road team is 15-6-1 against the spread in the last 22 meetings of these two teams.
This game looks fairly close but I don’t like the Giants turnover ratio and with their lack of a running game and facing a tough pass defense they don’t have the diversity to get it done. Regardless the game should be tight but I am taking the points.
