NFL | San Diego Chargers 2013 Record: 9-7

The San Diego Chargers were one of the surprise teams of 2013, finishing the regular season with a solid record of 9-7, and defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs, only to lose to the Super Bowl bound Denver Broncos a week later.

Phillip Rivers enjoyed a resurgence last season, as the Chargers finished the year with the fourth ranked passing attack in the league, putting up an average of 270 yards per game.  The Chargers also had a solid ground attack, putting up better than 122 yards per outing.  Rivers had one of the best years of his career last season, and a lot of that thanks goes to Head Coach Mike McCoy.  McCoy is considered a QB guru, and he proved that to be the case with the job he did with Rivers in 2013.

Defensively the Chargers struggled last year.  San Diego had one of the worst rated secondaries in the league, giving up a horrible 260 yards per game on average.  Considering the fact that the Chargers play in the same division as the Broncos and their amazing aerial assault, this is definitely a concern.  San Diego did work to improve this area in the draft however, picking stud defensive back Jason Verrett out of TCU in the first round.

The road isn’t easy for the Chargers this season, as San Diego has to travel to San Francisco, Denver (of course) and Arrowhead.  The Chargers do get the Seahawks on their home field, but San Diego opens the season on the road at Arizona, which is always a tough place to play.  San Diego should be solid once again, but with this schedule, making the post season will be tough this year.
