The Buffalo Bills visit the Philadelphia Eagles as both look for their first win of the 2017 NFL preseason in week two preseason action on Thursday.
The Buffalo Bills will look to rebound after starting the preseason on a low note, falling to the Vikings by a final score of 17-10. Tyrod Taylor went 5 for 8 with 46 yards before Nathan Peterman took over, leading the way with 112 passing yards on 13 of 25 through the air, hooking up with Dezmin Lewis for the team’s lone touchdown in the loss. Peterman also rushed for 26 yards on 4 carries with a fumble, while Jonathan Williams led the team with 39 rushing yards on his 4 carries. Journeyman Mike Tolbert contributed 27 ground yards with 4 carries of his own while Sammy Watkins led the Bills in receiving in his final game in a Buffalo uniform, hauling in 4 balls for 39 yards before being traded to the L.A. Rams. The Bills defense got to work early, with Marquavius Lewis, Eddie Yarbrough and Jerry Hughes each recording a sack, while Joe Powell added an interception in the loss.
The Philadelphia Eagles will also look to bounce back after an opening loss, with theirs coming in the form of a 24-9 defeat at the hands of the Packers. Carson Wentz made the most of his limited action, going 4 for 4 with 56 yards and a touchdown. Matt McGloin saw the bulk of the action, completing 28 of 42 pass attempts for 205 yards and an interception. The Eagles run game was nearly invisible, with Corey Clement leading the team with 7 carries for 13 yards as the Eagles rushed for just 47 yards as a team in the loss. Bryce Treggs hauled in a team-leading 7 balls for 91 yards, while Mack Hollins recorded 4 receptions for 64 yards and the team’s oly touchdown in the losing effort. Trey Burton, Donnel Pumphrey, Billy Brown and David Watford both coughed up the ball, recording a total of 4 fumbles from the Eagles receiving core alone. Philly’s first round pick, defensive end Derek Barnett, made quite the impact, recording a pair of sacks while Gabe Wright and Alex McCalister each brought a sack to the party as well. McCalister, along with Tre Sullivan, each forced a fumble while Patrick Robinson and Kamu Grugier-Hill recovered the respective fumbles for Philadelphia. Mychal Kendricks also record a pick of Packers’ QB Brett Hundley in the losing effort.
Buffalo is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 Thursday games. Philadelphia is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games on grass while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 home games. The under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Neither of these teams did anything to instill much confidence after week one, however if I’m forced to pick, since it’s still going to be an extended battle of the backups, I like what McGloin and the Eagles offense was able to produce, so I’ll take the Eagles to get their first win of the preseason.
