The Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers play a preseason game Thursday at Heinz Field.
The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off a preseason win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 17-9. In the victory, Carson Wentz led the way with 89 passing yards and one interception, but he’ll miss time with a rib fracture. That means a lot more Chase Daniel and McLeod Bethel-Thompson at backup quarterback. Paul Turner and Zach Ertz combined for 60 receiving yards on nine receptions and Byron Marshall had two receptions. The Philadelphia Eagles ground game averaged 3.6 yards per carry and Kenjon Barner led the charge with 35 yards on seven carries. Defensively, Ed Reynolds led the Eagles with seven tackles, Fletcher Cox had one sack and C.J. Smith had three pass deflections.
The Pittsburgh Steelers hope to bounce back from a 30-17 loss to the Detroit Lions. In the losing effort, Landry Jones led the way with 55 passing yards and one touchdown. Ben Roethlisberger should get some reps in this game after missing the entire first game. Darrius Heyward-Bey and Cobi Hamilton combined for 51 receiving yards and one touchdown while Sammie Coates had three receptions. The Pittsburgh Steelers ground game averaged 4.3 yards per carry and Daryl Richardson led the charge with 44 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, Doran Grant led the Steelers with eight tackles, James Harrison had one sack and Shamarko Thomas had one pass deflection.
The Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games on grass and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games. The Steelers are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games on grass.
The Eagles lost their main backup quarterback in Wentz, which has to count for something. Meanwhile, Roethlisberger is sure to play some in this game while Landry Jones looked sharp for once. You have to like the Steelers QB depth more than the Eagles, which is why I'm siding with the home team and reasonable chalk.
