The Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers play preseason game No. 2 Friday at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Arizona Cardinals hope for a better showing after losing 31-10 to the Oakland Raiders. In the losing effort, Matt Barkley led the way with 121 passing yards and one interception. Carson Palmer could get slightly more reps after going 3-5 in the preseason opener. Jaxon Shipley and Troy Niklas combined for 99 receiving yards on five catches while Ifeanyi Momah had three receptions. The Arizona Cardinals ground game averaged 4.9 yards per carry and Elijhaa Penny led the charge with 43 yards on 15 carries. Defensively, Marqui Christian led the Cardinals with five tackles, Matthias Farley had a tackle for loss and Gabe Martin had one pass deflection.
The San Diego Chargers also look for a victory after losing their opener to the Tennessee Titans, 27-10. In the losing effort, Kellen Clemens led the way with 96 passing yards on eight completions. Philip Rivers had just two completions but did throw for a touchdown in the loss. Melvin Gordon and Hunter Henry combined for 77 receiving yards and one touchdown while James Jones had three receptions. The San Diego Chargers ground game averaged 4.4 yards per carry and Kenneth Farrow led the charge with 60 yards on 16 carries. Defensively, Nick Dzubnar led the Chargers with seven tackles, Damion Square had one sack and Craig Mager had one pass deflection.
The Cardinals are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games on grass. The Chargers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games on grass and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
Both of these clubs got waxed in their season opener and a lot of that has to do with a lack of good depth, especially at the quarterback position. This game could really go either way and you're in for a long night if you bet it. I'll side with the Chargers and the low line simply because they're at home. Other than that, I have nothing for this contest.
