The Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers meet Thursday in NFL preseason action at Levi's Stadium.
The Los Angeles Chargers are now 1-2 in preseason action after losing to the New Orleans Saints, 36-7. In the losing effort, Geno Smith and Phillip Rivers combined for 74 passing yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. Austin Ekeler led the Chargers with 50 rushing yards on six attempts while Andre Patton and Mike Williams combined for 34 receiving yards on three receptions. Desmond King led the Chargers with six tackles, Uchenna Nwosu had one sack and Isaac Rochell had one tackle for loss. The Chargers are allowing 24.6 points through three preseason games and have been held to three or less points offensively in four of their last five quarters. The good news for the Chargers is that they didn’t suffer any key injuries in their last preseason game, which has to be considered progress based on their track record the last couple of years. The Los Angeles Chargers have lost five of their last seven preseason games.
The San Francisco 49ers are now 1-2 in preseason action after losing to the Indianapolis Colts, 17-23. In the losing effort, Jimmy Garoppolo and C.J. Beathard combined for 218 passing yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. Alfred Morris led the 49ers with 84 rushing yards on 17 attempts while Richie James and Pierre Garcon combined for 127 receiving yards on five receptions. Fred Warner led the 49ers with five tackles, Jeremiah Attaochu had one sack and Brock Coyle had one tackle for loss. The 49ers have had issues finishing drives all preseason long and that has to be concerning considering this was an issue for this club last year as well. There’s issues to be concerned about the 49ers heading into the season, and we’ll learn quickly about this team due to the fact three of their first four regular season games are on the road. The San Francisco 49ers have lost four of their last six preseason games.
The Chargers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games on grass. The 49ers are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 home games, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Thursday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Chargers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
Neither of these teams have been great in preseason play dating back to last season, so this is your typical preseason contest. The difference is the Chargers have been downright awful offensively for most of this preseason, while the 49ers have shown some signs of life and could easily have a much more positive preseason if they could simply finish drives. The 49ers have had success outside of putting touchdowns on the scoreboard instead of field goals. I'll lay the small line with the 49ers at home.
